The Neck and Headache Connection- April 2013

THE NECK AND HEADACHE CONNECTION
April 2013

Hi Everybody Dr. Norris Here.

Patients with headaches also commonly complain of neck pain.  This relationship is the rule, not the exception and therefore, treatment for headaches must include treatment of the neck to achieve optimum results.  The term, “cervicogenic headaches” has been an accepted term because of the intimate connection between the neck and head for many years.  There are many anatomical reasons why neck problems result in headaches.  Some of these include:

The first 3 nerves exiting the spine in the upper neck go directly into the head.  They penetrate the muscles at the top of the neck near the attachments to the skull and therefore, any excess pressure on these nerves by the muscles or spinal joints will result in irritation and subsequent pain.

A nerve in the upper cervical region innervates sensation to the back of the head up to the top.  Therefore, problems located in the upper neck will often result in pain radiating up from the base of the skull over the top of the skull to the eyes and /or face.

Another nerve that innervates the upper shoulders and muscles in the front of the neck arises from the top levels in the neck.  Injury anywhere in the neck can result in spasm and pain in these large muscle groups.

There are other interconnections between the nerves of the neck and digestive areas.  These can affect taste, tongue and throat movements, and stomach complaints such as nausea.

When patients seek treatment for their headaches, an examination of the neck, upper back, and cranial nerves is routinely performed for the above reasons.  It is common to find upper cervical movement and vertebral alignment problems present in patients complaining of headaches. Tender points located between the shoulder blades, along the upper shoulders, on the sides of the neck and particularly, at the base of the skull are commonly found.  Pain often radiates from the tender point over the top of the skull when pressure is applied in the upper neck/base of the skull area. Tenderness on the sides of the head, in the temples, over the eyes, and near the jaw joint is also common. Traction or pulling the head to stretch the neck is often quite pain relieving and this is often performed as part of the chiropractic visit.  Chiropractic adjustments applied to the fixated or misaligned vertebra in the upper neck often brings very satisfying relief to the headache sufferer.  Exercises for the neck are also helpful in both reducing headache pain and in preventing occurrences, especially with stress or tension headaches.

So if you or someone you care about is suffering from headaches have them contact me for a consultation... hopefully I can get them out of pain.

“Because nobody has time for pain!”

Sincerely,
Dr. Michael Norris

A Special Thanks From Dr. Norris...
To:  My Patients

I heard something really interesting a few days ago and wanted to pass it along. It was a speaker talking about how every day we have a lot of negative things happen in our lives.  If you watch the news for only 5 minutes, you're probably going to be depressed for a month!
And here's the really interesting observation this speaker made:  He said that we always seem to react to all the bad stuff.  Whenever something goes wrong in our lives (or just seems to go wrong) we make sure everyone knows about it.  And we dwell on it.
On the contrary... when something good happens... most of the time we seem to not even acknowledge it.  And even worse, we ignore the people that do all the good things in our lives while we are concentrating on all the negative things.
That's why I've written this... to comment on and acknowledge something good.

I have no idea why, but recently, we have been experiencing an unusual flood of new patients that have been referred in from patients like you.  It makes me feel great that so many of my patients have the confidence in our office to send in their family and friends.
So, if you have recently recommended my services to a friend or loved one,
I would like to simply say thank you.

Sincerely,
Dr. Michael Norris

Immune System Part 3- March 2013

How Important Is Your Immune System?
Part 3
March 2013

Hello Everybody Dr. Norris Here.

This is part 3 of my newsletter on your immune system.  If you missed Part 1 or 2 you can go to my website at www.drnorrischiro.com and archive the newsletter page.  In Part 1, I told you about the drug resistant bacteria which is invading America.  Your immune system is the first and only defense against these types of bugs.  Our environment can cause our immunity to illness to be decreased.  Where we go, the people we come in contact with and the pathogens we are exposed to, all affect us.  In Part 2, we discussed the affects of what we ingest; healthy food versus bad food choices.  Smoking, alcohol and drugs have side effects, which can suppress our body's ability to tolerate illness.  So the answer to the question above is... your immune system is VERY IMPORTANT.

The activity we do obviously has impact on your body.  People who exercise are not as likely to get sick; and when they do get sick the symptoms are milder and shorter in duration.  This is because the fit person's body functions at a higher level.  Respiratory and circulatory function is better.  There are typically more white blood cells.  These factors allow us to fight-off microbes more efficiently.  But beware: more is not always better.  There is a point where too much exercise begins to decrease our immune system.  That is why rest and sleep is necessary.  You may have heard of the old saying "Don't burn the candle on both ends."  If we deprive our bodies of rest and sleep we open ourselves up to possibly getting sick.  6 to 8 hours of sleep per night is recommended to stay healthy.

Finally, the last component to keeping your immune system functioning properly is proper nerve function.  Think about this for a second... 90% of the functions that you body performs are controlled and regulated by your nervous system.  Breathing, heartbeat, digestion and brain function are all regulated by nerves.  The organs which support your immune system such as; the spleen, liver, kidneys and your skin are all controlled and regulated by the nervous system.  Therefore, keeping your nerves healthy and free from interference is essential.  The nerves can be irritated, inflamed and pinched by misaligned joints especially in your spine.  Chiropractic doctors are specifically trained to find and release misaligned joints, removing pressure on the nerves, thereby allowing a fully functional nervous system and enhanced immune system function.

So be proactive, avoid sick people, wash hands, make good choices in what you put into your body, exercise, get adequate rest and periodically see your chiropractor.  All these things give you the best chance for immunity from disease.
Sincerely,
Dr. Michael Norris

Immune System Part 2- Feb 2013

How Important
Is Your Immune System?

Part 2
February 2013

Hello Everybody Dr. Norris Here.

This is part 2 of my newsletter on your immune system.  If you missed part 1 you can go to my website at www.drnorrischiro.com and archive the newsletter page.  In part 1 I told you about the drug resistant bacteria which is invading America.  Your immune system is the first and only defense against these types of bugs.  With that said the answer to the above question is... VERY IMPORTANT.

It's ironic that the most common place people catch these pathogens, is in the hospital.  Over 100,000 people a year contract a fatal infection while in a hospital.  They are admitted with some medical problem expecting treatment and instead they get sicker and eventually die. If you can... avoid hospitals.
If you can't... wash or disinfect your hands often.

Another factor affecting our immune system is what we ingest.  Deciding what to eat and drink either boosts our immune system or it hinders it.  Healthy eating decisions like fresh vegetables, fruit and grains are good choices.  Junk food and soda not good.
Any food rich in nutrients will enhance
immune system function.

Other things we ingest such as tobacco, alcohol and illegal drugs will also suppress your body's natural resistance.   Smokers have a high incidence of bronchial and lung infections.  It is well documented that alcohol and drug abusers are much more susceptible to illness and disease.

Even properly prescribed medications many have side-effects.  If you open a box of medication there is usually a full page of cautionary side-effects.  Television commercials for medications are just as bad.  They have 10 seconds about the benefits and 50 seconds about the potential problems.  My advice is to use as little medication as possible.

Finally a word about vitamins, whole food and herbal supplements.  Years ago most physicians did not believe supplements were necessary.  After 40 years of study and research the evidence indicates that people who use multivitamins are healthier and have a longer life-span.  If nutritious foods can help your immune system, I believe it makes sense that vitamins and supplement use can also give a boost to your immune system.

So be proactive, avoid medications, make good choices, use supplements responsibly
and keep your family healthy.

In two weeks more on your immune system.
Sincerely,
Dr. Michael Norris

Immune System Part 1- Feb 2013

How Important
Is Your Immune System?

Part 1

February 2013

Hello Everybody Dr. Norris Here.

You may have heard about the drug resistant bacteria which is invading America.  There are some bacteria which cannot be treated.  They can cause severe symptoms and sometimes death.  Physicians are also reluctant to treat some viral infections because they are usually resistant to medications.  This seems like science fiction, but it is real!  So what can we do?  Well that brings me to the question in the title of this newsletter.  Your immune system is the first and only defense against these pathogens.  With that said the answer to the above question is... VERY IMPORTANT.

Over the next two months this newsletter will address the factors which decrease immunity and those factors which enhance it.  Because of the amount if information I need to give you, I will send this newsletter every two weeks instead of monthly.

Taber's Medical Dictionary defines immunity as:
The state of being protected from acquiring a disease. The response of the body in resisting pathogens.
To put is simply have you ever wondered why some people get the flu and others don't?  Even when an entire family is exposed to it, some will get sick and others won't.  Our ability to fight off the flu virus is dependent on our immune system.  Some factors are out of our control.  The very young and the very old have less immunity.  Those of us who are already sick will have a suppressed immune system.
But for everyone else there are factors we control which can boost our protection.

These factors fall into four categories:
  1. External Factors- Environment and our response to it,
  2. Input- What we ingest.
  3. Output- The activities we do.
  4. System Function- Your body’s functional capacity.

My intention is not to scare everyone into thinking that monsters are coming to get us.  Hopefully you can be proactive and keep your family healthy.

For the time being here are some facts to remember.  Pathogens include; bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi.  We "catch" these bugs from exposure with people and environment.  The black plague was spread by rats that had fleas which were biting humans.  People who lived where there were no fleas, seldom got sick.  The most common place people are exposed to the drug resistant bacteria is at hospitals and medical clinics.  So if you if you have to go there refrain from touching anything or anyone.
Use antibacterial soap and sanitizers.  Avoid touching your face and especially your eyes.  Those areas provide direct access into your body.  After you leave wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water.

In two weeks, more on your immune system.
Sincerely,
Dr. Michael Norris

Resolutions for the New Year

Resolutions for the New Year
January 2013

Hi Everybody Dr. Norris Here.

Every January millions of Americans make a promise to improve their lives.  Most resolutions involve improving health such as: eating better, losing weight and working-out more.  How many of these promises are kept?  Not many.

For almost 20 years now I've been swimming three times a week at Eastside pool in Lancaster.  The pool will be packed for the next three weeks.  By the middle of February the lanes will be empty.  I'm sure you have noticed this if you workout at a gym.  Because of this I would like to offer you a few short term, easy-to- keep resolutions which may encourage you... instead of disappointing you.
First, the shorter the time involved the more likely we are to keep to a resolution.  Given this fact these recommendations are short-term.  If you notice benefits hopefully you will want and be able to continue.

#1.  A 3 Day Detox: As I mentioned above many of us want to eat better.  A short detox diet can help to jumpstart better eating habits.
Here is the 3-day-detox plan:
  • You can eat as much uncooked fruit, melon and vegetables as you want.Except for corn, potatoes and avocados.
  • Fruit smoothies and salads are your friend.
  • You can make a dressing of vinegar, citrus juice and spices.  As a last resort you can use a non-calorie dressing.
  • The uncooked food will help cleanse your system.
  • No carbs, meat, dairy, sugar or fat/oil of any kind.
  • You can drink 100% vegetable juice, black coffee or tea and at least 2 liters of purified water to flush out your system.
  • If you have blood sugar issues, a small glass of fruit juice should help.
After 3 days you should be lighter and healthier. Just go easy on the pancakes.

#2.  Start Moving.  Statistics show the healthiest people do some kind of exercise.  Walking, golf, swimming, jogging, cycling and aerobics classes are all good options.  Ideally the activity should be done 30-45 min. 3-5 times per week.  The simplest and most functional activity is walking. Commit to walking for at least one week.  After a week see how it goes, grab a friend and move it, move it, move it!

#3. Don't Worry, Be Happy.  With the way things are going politically, socially and economically it is easy to be depressed.  But make no mistake about it stress and worry can have negative physical effects on people.  Our immune system is depressed when we are depressed.  It has been said that complaining involves the past, self-pity involves the present and worry involves the future.  With that said take one day at a time... let the past go, enjoy the present and prepare for the future.  For one week keep a journal and write down the things that you are most thankful for that day or what good things happened.  Then read the previous entries each day.  Even if you are not happy seeing the good things in your life will help you see why you should be happy and hopefully help you act like you are happy... it may become a habit.

#4. Get Something Done.  Many of us feel like we never get things done and that can produce a sense of frustration.  Pick the one thing that you really want to get done... a task which you can and will finish within one week.  Then just get it done.  You will feel empowered and motivated to do more.
For me it's finishing the book I started 4 months ago... only 50 pages to go!

I wish you a healthy and happy new year.

Christmas- Dec 2012

HOLIDAY TIME
December 2012

Hi Everybody Dr. Norris here.

This year went by so fast... hard to believe it is almost 2013!  Looking back my family and I have been truly blessed this year.  Cindy, Amanda and I went on a cruise in May to the Caribbean.  We snorkeled in the Bahamas and were able to see Miami and Key West for the first time.

I have been able to do some fishing in my spare time.  My wife, Cindy has continued to do mobile notary work and make my home a great place to be.  My daughter, Amanda continues to work for me and has been teaching an art class.  She hopes to be able to expand her teaching next year.

Finally... I've been very blessed by all of the wonderful patients I have been fortunate to see this year.  From long-time friends to new patients you are all a part of my family.  Thank you for trusting your health to me.

I hope you and yours have a Merry Christmas.

Oh... and a mishap free new year...

Mission Statement- Nov 2012

OUR MISSION STATEMENT
November 2012

Hi Everybody Dr. Norris Here.

I was recently asked on a form I was filing "What is your mission statement?" So I wrote: To provide quality affordable health care to the Antelope Valley. To do this I have prepared myself with three college degrees (BS Phys Ed, MS Sports Medicine and Doctorate in Chiropractic).  To stay on top of changes I attend 30 hours of yearly continuing education courses.  To provide affordable care I keep my overhead low.  This allows me to keep my fees low.  At Norris Chiropractic, children under 12 are treated free with a paying parent.  But the bottom line is I really enjoy helping people get out of pain...

A DOG'S PURPOSE

We all get a lot of junk e-mail.  I received this story from a friend via e-mail and I was surprised how great it was.  Because I'm a dog person and I have had to put down a few pets it was tough to read.
Thanks to Mike F. for the story.

A veterinarian was called to examine an old dog named Belker who was very sick.  The dog's owners and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker.
The examination revealed Belker was dying of cancer.

As arrangements for euthanasia were being made, the owners told the vet they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure.
They felt he might learn something from the experience.  As the family surrounded their beloved pet and Shane petted the old dog for the last time the boy seemed unusually calm.  The adults wondered if the boy understood what was going on.
Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The adults sat together for a while, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animals’ lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who was listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."  What he said was amazing and a comforting explanation that we can all learn from.  He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life... like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?"  The Six-year-old continued,

"Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

Things we can all learn from dogs:

-Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply.
-When loved ones come home,
  always run to greet them.
-Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
-Play daily.
-Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
-On warm days, stop and lie on your back on the grass.
-Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
-Be loyal.
-Enjoy every moment of every day!

HEALTH UPDATE: Here is some Thanksgiving Day advice.  Turkey is low in fat and an excellent source of protein.  Left-over roasted turkey can be mixed with nutritious vegetables and made into casseroles and soups.  Just go easy on the potatoes and rolls.  And remember just because pumpkin is a vegetable doesn't mean you should have three helpings of pumpkin pie.
